Although we may have been drooling while watching every episode of The Great British Bake Off, at least we never has to worry about the calories (unless like us you popped to the shop for a quick chocolate fix).

However, after taking the crown during Tuesday night’s final, John Whaite revealed that the three finalists gained four stone between them throughout the competition.

The 23-year old winner, who stunned judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood with his beautiful heaven and hell cake, revealed that he has put on a stone and a half after indulging in cakes, pies and pastries he had made and sampled.

“I put on a stone-and-a-half. I had to exercise it off. If you are going to indulge you have to make sure you work it off,” he said on BBC Breakfast.

The winner also revealed that our favourite contestant, 63-year-old Brendan Lynch gained ten pounds during the bake off and medical student James Morton packed on two stone.

Earlier this week John posted an old photo of his slimmer self and wrote: “Seeing this old pic makes me regret my 5th mille feuille of today!”

Speaking of his win John said: “I was stunned when I won. We all didn’t expect to win. There isn’t any prize money but I think that’s a good thing because for us [the contestants] it’s about our passion, it’s not about entering competition to make money.

“My mum is really, really proud of me. She doesn’t care what I do for a living – she just wanted me to  finish my law degree. It’s been a great year.”

We’re still a little bit disappointed after our favourite Brendan’s cake just didn’t live up to the judge’s expectations. However, we wouldn’t say no to a chunky slice of his family reunion cake. It looked scrumptious!
