In Real Life: The Runaway Fiancé

You couldn't make this up!

Cassie Delaney

We’re often baffled by the weird and wonderful stories that come our way. Last week we we’re flabbergasted by the tale of Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse who was accused of marrying another woman while telling his girlfriend he was on holiday.

We we’re even more astounded when one of our Her.ie readers contacted us to say the same thing had happened to her.

Audrey Greene reached out and explained;

“In 2005 I met a lovely guy while living and working in Tenerife, he was gorgeous, fun, charming the whole package and we quickly fell in love. He was from Romania. A few months later I fell pregnant with our first child. I thought it was best if I came back to Ireland to have the baby and he returned home to his family too.

We kept up a long distance relationship for over a year. The baby and I visited him often until in 2007 he was finally able to get a visa to come to Ireland.

He proposed with a very romantic proposal in the street at a fireworks display at a minute past midnight New Years Eve 2007.

Unfortunately things weren’t easy and he found it nearly impossible to get work at first. In 2008 he found a job that meant travelling a lot but we made it work as much as possible.

In 2008 I had our second child and though it was a struggle, I thought we we’re madly in love.

We spent our time planning our wedding and making provisions for the future. We even went house hunting! Life was really great. As a boyfriend he was near perfect. He was romantic, kind, caring, charming and I’d have trusted him with my life. We had our ups and downs like any couple but I was sure I wanted to spend my life with him.

In 2010 he had to travel to Bulgaria for work and we stayed in constant contact until September. Gradually the contact lessened until it eventually completely stopped. I was worried sick.

Nobody heard from him, not even his boss. I tried to contact members of his family on Facebook and one day as I typed the surname into Facebook a familiar face popped up.

There, right in front of me, was my fiancé, the father of my children and the love of my life dressed in a suit with his new wife beside him.

I browsed more and sure enough I found a tonne of pictures from their wedding day in October.

He eventually called on New Years Day 2011 at 6.30am and even had the audacity to ask me to collect him from Dublin Airport. He pretended like nothing was wrong and when I confronted him he said it wasn’t what it looked like.

That was the last I ever heard from him. It’s like he vanished into thin air. His friends and family all stopped talking to me and his parents even stopped calling to speak to the kids.

I still don’t know how he managed to pull the wool over my eyes – they say love is blind and I guess they’re right”
