In Her Own Words | Referendum Light Moments

Katie shares her reflections as an LGBT person

Cassie Delaney

Sometimes we come across stories and blogs so perfectly told that we can’t do much to improve them. So we’re not going to. We’re going to offer the opportunity to share stories exactly as you want them told.

In this new series, we’re creating podcasts from our favourite blogs, read by their writers in their own voices. This is In Her Own Words.

Despite being no stranger to putting pen to paper, scriptwriter Katie McNeice original began blogging as a platform to share her artwork and digital projects. It is only recently that she has begun penning more personal intimate experiences. The reaction to these pieces has surprised Katie. She says,

“It was the first time I wrote something highly personal or vulnerable. It was certainly the first time I hit ‘publish’ hoping to reach someone beyond myself. The stats went nuts for weeks after. I really couldn’t believe it”.

Marriage Equality was a poignant topic for Katie and is something that inspired the piece below. In this post she shares the intimate moment a relative shared her reasoning for voting YES in the marriage referendum.

The post has received immensely positive feedback and on the future of her blog Katie says

“I was in shock at the great response to more personal pieces in the last few months. I was worried at the time that I may have been over sharing or exposing myself too much. As I said in The Referendum: Light Moments though, communicating our private lives is an essential part of creating positive change. Whatever my future experiences are, whether heartbreaking or downright hilarious (and thankfully I have a good mix of the two!) I think I’ll be sharing them a lot more from here on”.

We look forward to reading them.
