“I’ll Never Forget How we Met”: Married Couple Who Met at Bus Shelter Given Sign from Stop

A unique gift to celebrate the special moment.

Eight years ago, Aly Hussien plucked up the courage to ask Michala Stokes out after seeing her at the bus shelter everyday on his way to work at Gloucester Road.

“Every day I used to see her at the same time in the same place and really wanted to get to know her so one day I took the opportunity to say hello” said Hussein.

“Our daily chats led to me asking her out properly.”

The couple got married three years ago.

A friend of the couple, Tat Mersy, learnt that Bristol City Council was planning on removing the stop and so she got in touch with them about the sign.

Mersy wrote in her letter to the council about how the couple met and what that particular spot meant to them.

She wrote: “Could you possibly find it in your hearts to gift them a small piece of the bus stop?”

Officials at the council then offered her the sign to give to the happy couple.

“We’ve now been married for three years but I’ll never forget how we met and it’s wonderful that we can keep a little bit of our history forever” said Hussein.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Geoffrey Gollop said that “amazing and wonderful” things can happen at bus shelters.

“I’m delighted that Bristol City Council with Clear Channel are able to help Aly and Michala mark the start of their romance in this way” he said.

The pair said they plan to put the bus stop sign in their back garden.
