Chicago

Chicago is one of the largest cities in the US and is famous worldwide for its stunning and bold architecture. Steeped in culture and home to an extensive array of museums, Chicago is also the inspiration behind Gotham City in Batman. 

In fact, the windy city has something to amaze and entice around every corner.

Chicago River

Take a cruise down Chicago’s famous river, that’s known to flow backwards and is dyed green on St. Patrick’s Day – you won’t regret it.

Handy hint: A cruise down the river regardless of the time of day is worth every second – but sunset is particularly special.

Adler Planetarium

The best thing about Adler Planetarium is the virtual-reality trip through time and space in the Sky Theatre – this is a MUST see.

Handy hint: Book your tickets and arrive early. It’s great fun for all ages.

Navy Pier

The world’s first Ferris wheel made its appearance in Chicago back in 1893, and today, Navy Pier boasts a giant Ferris wheel modelled on the original.

Handy hint: If you’re lucky, you might catch one of their amazing fireworks displays.

Willis Tower

Formerly known as Sears Tower, the Willis Tower is one of the tallest buildings in the Western Hemisphere and has elevators that are among the fastest in the world, going at a speed of 1,600 feet per minute.

Handy hint: Again, booking ahead is key but the views and Skydeck are worth it.

Buckingham Fountain

Known as one of the largest fountains in the world, Buckingham Fountain is a major Chicago landmark located in the centre of Grant Park.

Handy hint: Bring a camera and pack a picnic – Grant Park is pretty amazing.

John Hancock Centre

The 100-storey tower is a must visit if only just to admire it as a building. Located on North Michigan Avenue, it’s definitely worth a stop

Handy hint: Visit 360 Chicago where you can enjoy food and the sights from the 94th floor.

Sports stars

Home to the world famous Chicago Bulls and of course, baseball stars Chicago Cubs, take a visit to the ballpark at Wrigley Field, or check out the Chicago Bears playing in Soldier Field.

Handy hint: Read up on your teams before you go if you want to get in with the locals.

The Loop

Chicago’s downtown area is known as the Loop and it’s something that you will hear over and over again during your time there. The nickname comes from the ‘L’ train tracks that run overhead.

Handy hint: You’ll feel like you’re in Batman. It’s pretty amazing.

Lincoln Park Zoo

One of the last free zoos, Lincoln Park Zoo is spread out over 35-acreas. Founded in 1868, it is one of the oldest zoos in the US.

Handy hint: Get there early and bring plenty of water!

Deep-Dish pizza

You can’t leave Chicago without sampling some deep-dish pizza. End. Of. Story.

Handy hint: Giordano’s is one of our favourites.

The Bean

A public sculpture by Anish Kapoor, Cloud Gate has been nicknamed The Bean by locals because of its shape.

Handy hint: Bring a camera – this will blow your mind.

The Art Institute

Famous worldwide, the Art Institute of Chicago is located in Chicago’s Grant Park and boasts a stunning collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art.

Handy hint: As with a lot of the tourist attractions, get here early and prepare to be amazed.
