Eyeing up a holiday in the sun? This week we take you off to stunning Malta with dazzling beaches and crystal clear water, it’s a little bit of paradise.

Malta’s capital Valletta has been described by UNESCO’s World Heritage website as “one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world”. From the stunning Manoel theatre to brilliant museums, forts and bastions it’s a must stop.

Handy hint: With fabulous restaurants and great shops you will need a few days here.

St John’s Co-Cathedral

Listed as one of the most popular attractions on the island, St John’s Co-Cathedral is the Knights of Malta’s main church. Inside will take your breath away as it dazzles in gold and marble.

Handy hint: The audio guide is worth it and don’t miss out on the oratory.

Mdina Old City

The tiny maze of streets through Mdina are amazing to explore as you zig zag your way through Malta’s first citadel capital. Take a trip into Bastion Square for some stunning views and stop into Mdina cathedral.

Handy hint: Wander the streets during the day before sitting down to an exquisite meal in the evening as the sun sets.

The Azure Window

A huge natural arch in the sea cliffs, the Azure Window is a very popular dive and snorkelling spot. Coupled with the Blue Hole, it is well worth a visit.

Blue Lagoon

Comino’s Blue Lagoon is famous worldwide and is a must-stop. A little island located between Malta and Gozo, you can pack in a brilliant day’s worth of activities. Visit the chapel, the castle and enjoy the views.

Handy hint: The Blue Lagoon is one of the best spots for snorkelling.

Gozo

Just a half-hour ferry ride away, the smaller island north of Malta is a worthwhile day trip. Friendly locals and beautiful coastlines have made it a firm favourite with visitors.

Handy hint: Take in the Citadella, the Dwejra area and Ggantija Temples.

Dive into the blue

Malta attracts divers from around the world as it offers some of the best diving in the Mediterranean. Pick up a beginners’ course or head out with a group to discover some underwater wrecks.

Handy hint: There are a number of dive centres around the island and trips to Comino and Gozo can also be organised. Be sure to check that your centre is licensed.

Another of the must-see sights in Malta, the burial complex is cut into solid rock and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just ten people per hour can visit so be sure to book well in advance.

Handy hint: If you don’t get chance to book before you arrive, check out the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta for some last minute tickets.

Malta’s temples

Speaking of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Malta’s temples are some of the oldest stone buildings in the world and date back to between 3600 BC and 2500 BC. Mnajdra and Hagar Qim are two of the most popular temples to visit.

Grand Harbour

Before you leave Malta, be sure to do a Grand Harbour boat tour. Steeped in history, the Harbour has witnessed some very significant events through the ages.
