Angkor Wat
The main tourist attraction in Cambodia, Angkor Wat (City Temple) is the most magnificent temple of all. Built in the early stages of the 12th century, you will need more than just a couple of hours to explore the surrounds, and of course, channel your inner tomb raider.
Handy hint: Be vigilant at the entrance way and exit: Keep an eye on your personal belongings.
Bayon
Bayon is a well-known Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia and is full of distinctive features – best known for its massive stone faces which have to be seen to be believed.
Handy hint: This is a must-see.
Siem Reap
A hugely popular stop for backpackers, Siem Reap is where you’ll stop over to make your way to Angkor Wat. Fast becoming a major tourist hub, there are a lot of hotels and restaurants to choose from.
Handy hint: Book in for a few days to truly explore the temples and surrounding areas properly.
Phnom Penh
Cambodia’s capital and the largest city in the country was once known as ‘the pearl of Asia’. It is a hugely popular city with stunning buildings dating back from French colonial days.
Handy hint: Visit the Royal Palace and the National Museum, and pay a visit to the night market.
Battambang
A popular Cambodian city, Battambang is steeped in history and culture and has many Angkor-style temples and shrines to visit. Be sure to stop off at the Central Market for a peek too.
Handy hint: Visit the famous statute of an ancient Khmer King which is located on the road out of the city to Phnom Penh.
Sihanoukville
The most popular beach resort in Cambodia, Sihanoukville is located on the Gulf of Thailand and is also known as Kompong Saom. It’s absolutely perfect for some down time after a busy few days sightseeing.
Handy hint: Book into a little hut on the beach and head off snorkelling.
Banlung
If you like outdoor adventure then Banlung is the place for you. A number of tour companies run trips up into the jungles of northern Cambodia where you will get up close with nature, including lots of different wildlife and even a few monkeys!
Handy hint: Visit Yeak Laom Volcanic Lake and check out the local tradition of weaving.
Kratie
A small town that is becoming increasingly popular with tourists and backpackers, Kratie is on the banks of the Mekong River and is a prime location for spotting the rare Irrawaddy dolphins.
Handy hint: Check out the central marketplace and some pretty beautiful architecture.
Kep
A small sea-side resort that offers visitors a host of different activities, Kep is definitely a firm favourite. Take a trip to Rabbit Island but be prepared for sporadic electricity and perhaps time your visit for day time.
Handy hint: Visit Kep National Park and the butterfly preserves.
