The hidden iPhone update that can save your battery life

You might not know about this.

Cathy Donohue

Okay, what?!

So apparently there’s a hidden iPhone feature that can save your battery life and of course, we’re absolutely raging we didn’t know about this before now.

Spotted on JOE.ie, “Facedown Detection” was introduced with the iOS 9 update but not much fuss was made about it.

It’s pretty self-explanatory as it basically means that having the phone’s screen turned down instead of up saves battery because it doesn’t light up every time you get a new notification.

It came into operation alongside the “Low Power Mode” but to activate it, you have to make sure that “Fitness Tracking” is turned on.

What the correlation between those two things is I have absolutely no idea but look if it saves some battery, I’m all for it.

Turning on this function is very simple and the steps are outlined in the screen grabs below.

You open:

  • Settings
  • Privacy
  • Motion & Fitness
  • Fitness Tracking

However, there is a downside as this feature is only accessible to those in possession of newer iPhone models such as the 6, 6s and 7.

If you do have one of the above iPhones, have a look and see if the feature is enabled because anything’s better than having to carry your charger with you EVERYWHERE.
