Our little island may be a small country but when it comes to the world of writing, we have some big talent. Case in point? John Boyne.
John Boyne is an Irish novelist who has written a host of books aimed at adults (and three for younger readers). His talent for storytelling is immense and once you pick up one of his novels, you will be hooked. He is the author that the Irish Examiner once dubbed “one of the best and original of the new generation of Irish writers.”
While John is known for his novel The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, he has many other works that are perfect for getting completely lost in. Given that today is John’s birthday, we thought it was only fitting to have a look at five of his best books.
_________
The Thief of Time
This was John’s debut novel and it was met with critical acclaim. The book begins in 1758 and centres on Matthieu Zela, a man feeling Paris after witnessing the murder of his mother and his stepfather’s execution. However, Matthiew has a secret: his body has stopped ageing. In this book various worlds (old and new) are woven together. It is compulsive reading.
The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas
This book marked a turning point in John’s career and turned out to be a massive success. It went on to win two Irish Book Awards and the Penguin Orange Readers’ Group Prize. It was shortlisted for the British Book Award and was made into a blockbuster. Written from the point of view of Bruno, a 9-year-old boy growing up during World War II, the novel follows his friendship with Shmuel – a Jewish boy who is imprisoned in a concentration camp. It’s a heartbreakingly brilliant read and despite the fact that it’s aimed at younger readers, adults will enjoy this one too.
Crippen
If you want a book that you will be physically unable to put down then make sure you check out Crippen. Set in 1910, the novel begins with a gruesome discovery: the remains of Cora Crippen but who killed her? Suspicions grow when it is revealed that Dr. Hawley Crippen, Cora’s husband, has disappeared from London with his mistress. Expects twists and turns aplenty in this novel – it will leave you guessing right to the very last page.
Noah Barleywater Runs Away
Another book aimed at younger readers, but it’s still just as enjoyable for grown-ups. This book follows Noah, a little boy who decides to run away from his problems. He ends up finding his way to a very strange toyshop where he meets and even stranger toymaker. The toymaker and Noah then travel on a journey that will change both of their lives forever. This is perfect novel to read with one of your younger children.
The Absolutist
Set in September 1919 this novel follows the life of Tristan Sadler, a young man who undertakes a journey to deliver letters to the sister of a man he fought alongside during the Great War. However, Tristan has a secret that he has to get out in the open. You won’t believe the unexpected ending to this novel. A must read.
