“Kaelem you will forever be missed.”

Mike Dirnt, co-founder and bassist with Green Day, has spoken out after the death of a young Irish man who claimed to be one of their biggest fans.

Yesterday we reported on the thousands of people calling on Green Day to record a message of support for the funeral of 17-year-old Dubliner Kaelem Hainsworth, who died suddenly last weekend.

Kaelem’s friend and cousin Mikey Power posted a message on the official Facebook page of the band late on Monday night, speaking of his friend’s love for the band and asking for a video message from the band that could be played at Kaelem’s funeral.

Within hours thousands of people had liked and shared the message, and the hashtag #makekaelemsdaygreen began to trend on Twitter.

Last night, Mike Drint from Green Day posted this message on the official band website:

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Kaelem Hainsworth, a Green Day fan in Dublin passed away suddenly at the young age of 17, and we want to send our deepest condolences to Kaelem’s family and friends.  His funeral is this Thursday, which falls on Thanksgiving in the United States, and hearing sad news around the holidays always makes it more upsetting. Kaelem you will forever be missed.

Kaelem’s funeral will take place tomorrow, Thursday.
