Girls Gone Write: Lena Dunham From “Girls” Signs Major Book Deal

The actress/writer has officially inked a contract with publishing giant Random House for a book all about life (amongst other things).

Lena Dunham, the woman who brought us the hilarious Girls, has just signed a book deal with publishing giant Random House in one of the most heated book auctions of the year.

Lena’s debut essay collection Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s Learned, was pursued by some major publishers after Lena circulated a proposal with colour, pictures and her signature sharp humour. And you know what? Word on the street says that Lena’s debut book could become a bestseller as soon as it hits the shelves.

You might remember Lena from the HBO comedy series Girls – a programme that she not only stars in, but also writes. The popular show follows the misadventures of a group of twenty-something women who live in New York City and we have to say, it’s pretty hilarious. If you haven’t seen it yet, get thee to your sofa and watch it until you’ve caught up.

Anyway, the bidding for Lena’s book climbed past an eye-watering $3.5million. Not bad, right? We can only hope that if any of us writes a book that it reaches that much!

Lena and her Girls co-stars.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Lena to Random House. Her skill on the page as a writer is remarkable – fresh, wise, so assured. She is that rare literary talent that will only grow from strength to strength and we look forward to helping her build a long career as an author,” said Susan Kamil, the editor-in-chief and publisher of Random House in a statement.

Random House has already described Lena’s book as being “in the tradition of Helen Gurley Brown, David Sedaris and Nora Ephron” and that it offers “frank and funny advice on everything from sex to eating to travelling to work.”

According to reports, Lena has said she is “thrilled to be working with and learning from the brilliant minds at Random House, and to be among their incredible roster of authors. I look forward to digging deep with Andy and co. to produce the most thoughtful and personal book I can.”

If it’s anything like her masterpiece Girls, then we honestly can’t wait to get our hands on a copy.
