Mary Maxwell lost 165 pounds after almost all of her immediate family lost their lives to obesity-related complications.
Her father died before she was born, and her mother and aunt passed away before she was three years old.
She explained that as young as two years old she was "heading in the same direction" as her family.
Mary had gastric bypass surgery, but now needs a second surgery - to remove her excess skin.
Sharing images of her stomach on a gofundme page to raise the money for the expensive surgery, she wrote:
"So many times I've looked at the skin and cried. I wonder to myself how I ever could ruin my body the way I did.
"I am usually confident about it but lately more and more people point it out to me and I've just had enough."
"Until the miraculous day when I can rid myself of the old me I will hold my head up high and be proud of how far I've come.
"Emotionally it is tough, physically it is tough but I am tough!"
