Gardaí have said that they detected 974 people speeding in Ireland in 24 hours.
The figure is three times more than the number of motorists caught for the offence on the same day last year.
Speed checks were carried out between 7am yesterday until this morning as part of Operation Slowdown. Approximately 124, 818 vehicles were checked.
June Bank Holiday is seen as one of the busiest and most dangerous days of the year on the roads. Last year 298 people were caught speeding.
The Gardaí report that the highest speed recorded was 147km/h in a 80 km/h zone on the R238 at Lisfannan, Buncrana in Donegal.
Other notable recordings include: 90 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N11 at Stillorgan, Dublin as well as 78km/h in a 50 km/h zone on the N59 at Bushy Park in Galway.
