They day your school days are the best days of your life, and the further we get away from them, the more we’re inclined to agree! When your biggest concern was what to bring in for Show and Tell day, life was a happy place. We’re looking back at five things we really miss from our primary school days.

Who cares what it was called? It just served to cause an argument so lets just agree to disagree. Whatever the proper name was, this distant cousin of Play-Doh was quite possibly one of the best things about our early school years. What did you learn today Maura? Well, I learned how to make a very strange looking figure out of this odd clay like substance. And yes, her face IS supposed to look like that.

The School Tour
The most magical day of the year. Even if it was only as far as a ‘historically significant’ graveyard, (and yes, that did happen to one of Team Her.ie), it was a very special occasion. As your uniform was deemed unnecessary, you spent weeks planning your outfit – in close consultation with your best friends. Mammy packed a lunch that contained far more treats that you were normally allowed, and if you were really lucky you might even have a parent, grandparent or neighbor slip you a sneaky fiver for your spending money.

The MS READaTHON
An annual occurrence and one that fostered an early love of books that grew up to become a lifetime commitment. Running for almost thirty years now, it’s wonderful to think that the children currently occupying the classrooms we graduated from are still taking on the challenge of reading and fundraising in aid of a wonderful cause. There was a sense of competition to read more books than your buddies, and raise more money too – although this usually resulted in begging and pleading with a parent to take you sponsorship card into work with them! Plus, the MS READaTHON came recommended by The Den, and if it was good enough for Ray, Zig and Zag, it was definitely good enough for us!

The Sports Day
Try telling someone your speciality is in a sack these days, and see how far it gets you! Back then, it meant you were ready for the grand trio of School Sports Day events – the sack race, the egg (potato) and spoon race, and the three-legged race. Leave the sprinting to the same too speedy whiz kids who fought it our every year, concentrate on the tests of skill. The three-legged race could be anyone’s, as it was dependent on two friends being perfectly in tandem, but the other two you could really be ready for.

Siamsa Annuals
We’re still BIG fans of Christmas at Her.ie HQ (only 98 days to go!) but the most wonderful time of the year was even more wonderful when you were in primary school. Innocence still intact, you could not WAIT for Santa’s visit, and you knew he was truly on the way from the North Pole when these treasures landed on teacher’s desk. No further work was to be done that day…
