Naming the top proposal locations usually involves a list including the Eiffel Tower, Tiffanys in New York or a remote beach at sunset. We never thought we’d see the beauty of proposing in the back of a taxi… until now.
John Tracy popped the question to his girlfriend Lesley Frankel after he tracked down the taxi with the same ID plate her late-grandfather used to drive in New York. Lesley’s grandfather Berek Kempinski drove his car with the ID plate 8D99 for 40 years, from 1955 to 1995.
Following his death, John noticed how his girlfriend would always watch taxi plates for her granddad’s number, saying:
“Losing him was tough to her. Whenever we were walking around, she’d see anything near that, and she’d let out an, ‘Oh, shucks! That was so close — 8C99!’ ”
After dating for four years, he decided he was going to propose, and that her grandfather’s taxi would make the perfect spot. Knowing it wouldn’t be an easy task, John took to Twitter to ask for help in tracking down the driver who now owns the 8D99 plate. With some help from his followers, the Taxi & Limousine Commission connected him with the new plate owner’s details, Sergio Cabrera.
So, how did the story play out?
John surprised his girlfriend at the children’s hospital she works in, and wanting to take her out for lunch ‘hailed’ the next yellow cab to come by. It was then Sergio Cabrera pulled up to the kerb, and his girlfriend instantly recognised her grandfather’s plate.
Lesley told the New York Post;
“I was shaking, I was in total shock. I’ve been looking for this medallion ever since my grandfather passed away.”
When they sat into the back seat, John proposed to his girlfriend. Of course she said yes.
