Festival Fever – Here Are The Best Racing Festivals To Attend This Summer!

There's plenty to do this summer!

Her

Horse racing represents the essence of Irish culture and fun. It encapsulates all the things we cherish in life. Good times with friends, family and interesting strangers, all sharing an enthusiasm for exhilarating outdoor sport and the majesty of the horse. A day at the races is the ultimate expression of that passion.

Horse racing is a sport at which the Irish are high achievers on a worldwide scale, but it is more than a sport to us, it’s an instinct ingrained in our psyche and is why we are so drawn to the raw, unscripted nature of this outdoor theatre, which offers a wide range of genuinely unique experiences with each visit. And that is why, if you have never been racing before, it’s time you gave it a go. You’ll have a day out you’ll never forget.

With so many amazing festivals happening across the country over the summer months, we thought we would pick out the best of the upcoming Racing festivals.

1. Tramore Festival, Co Waterford. 14th – 17th August.

Fun racing at one of the biggest seaside resorts in the country. Tramore is always enthusiastically attended, with strong support from the local population, which generates a vibrant, holiday atmosphere at a time when, traditionally, people are kicking back and relaxing. A great event to include in those holiday plans, especially if there are children involved.

2. Killarney August Festival, Co Kerry. 20th – 23rd August.

The most picturesque racecourse in the country and, arguably in any country. It is always a delight to visit. With the most scenic surroundings in Europe, it is racing for the soul…relaxed and laid-back but still retaining a keen sense of summer style and fun!

3. Irish Champions Weekend – Leopardstown, Co Dublin – Saturday 13 September. The Curragh, Co Kildare – Sunday 14 September.

This new concept condenses two of the best days of quality flat racing into one amazing weekend, uniting Leopardstown’s QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes and the Curragh’s final Classic, the Palmerstown House Estate Irish St Leger, plus a stellar cast of supporting races. With €3.7 million prize-money up for grabs over the two days, it’s going to be thrilling.

The Champion Stakes, as the name suggests, is frequently the race that crowns champions; its roll of honour reads like a who’s who of racing. On a world stage, this race is up there with the best. The St Leger is a marquee race in its own right but has also become the premier trial race in Europe for the Melbourne Cup.

4. Listowel Harvest Festival, Co Kerry. 14th – 20th September.

When it comes to festivals, nobody does it better than the people of Kerry! This one lasts a week so, there is no excuse for not making it. Big crowds, great fun and quality racing, the highlight being the Guinness Kerry National on Wednesday, so make sure to get there, the last hurrah of the summer festival season.
