Eating egg yolks can contribute to heart attack and stroke according to a study released today.
Researchers revealed that indulging in egg yolks can be as dangerous as smoking when it comes to cardiac health.
According to The Irish Sun, Dr. David Spencer said that eating the popular breakfast ingredient is about two-thirds as bad as smoking when it comes to an increased build up of cholesterol.
The Canadian professor found that people who eat at least three eggs a week have significantly more plaque in their arteries than those who eat two or less.
He said: “The study shows that, with age, plaque builds up gradually in the arteries – and egg yolks make it build up faster.”
Doctors tested 1,231 patients with an average age of 61.5.
People with cardiac problems should cut back on eggs according to doctors
The research shows that a dangerous plaque built up in those who ate eggs on a regular basis after the age of 40.
Dr. Spencer said that those with cardiac problems should cut eggs out of their diet completely.
The doctor noted that a large egg contains about 237 milligrams of cholesterol.
“It’s more than the cholesterol in a monster thick burger which is two-thirds of a pound of beef, three slices of cheese and four slices of bacon,” he said.
