Meet Bazz – the black labrador beekeeper – who has been trained to sniff out a killer bee disease that has been wiping out hives in south Australia.
Bazz the black labrador was specially trained by beekeeper Josh Kennett to detect by smell a killer bee disease called American foulbrood. Bazz even has his own beekeerper’s suit – and it’s just adorable.
Bazz’s beekeeper trainer created the incredible suit after a long process of trial and error to keep the labrador from being stung on patrol.
Speaking to the Huffington Post, trainer Josh Kennett said:
“I realised that Bazz was able to sniff out the disease, and save thousands of bees – but he didn’t like being around them too much when he was getting stung.
“So I’ve tried to develop a suit the dog can wear and hopefully avoid being stung.”
Kennet has now said the only challenge is getting Bazz comfortable with the suit.
You can’t teach a dog new tricks, but you can protect him from the stings his talents may bring.
