Do: Remember to buy a card; Don’t: broadcast your love on social media. Our guide to the perfect V-Day

All of the feels...

Whether great gushing romance is your thing, or you’re a committed cynic, Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching and it can’t be avoided. No matter what your take is on love, here are some key do’s and don’t’s to abide by on the most romantic day of the year…

DO: Acknowledge the occasion first thing in the morning. Get the day off to a good start by bringing your better half a cup of tea in bed. This will set the tone for the rest of the day. It’s the simple things in life, people.

DON’T: Post declarations of your love for eachother on social media. 800 of your closest friends don’t need to read about your undying love for your other half. Avoid subjecting the general public to the mushy stuff – nobody wants to see that.

DO: Remember to buy a card. He might put up a brave front, but if you do forget to pick up a card for your other half, we can guarantee that he’ll be hurt. And nobody wants that on Valentine’s Day.

DO: Put some thought into what you write in the card. Talking about our feelings isn’t something we excel at as a nation. It can actually be difficult to figure out how an Irish person feels about you – sure we wouldn’t dare tell you to your face. But for the day that’s in it, do take a minute to make your note personal and include some private banter that you know will mean something special to your other half. The flowers and the box of choccies will be forgotten by Monday morning; it’s the sentimental things that we take with us for the rest of the year.

DON’T: Go out to a restaurant. This year the big day falls on a Saturday which means restaurants will be even more packed than usual. So unless you want to spend the evening elbow-to-elbow with other couples, and pay through the roof for dinner, our advice is to order in and snuggle up together in the comfort of your own home.

DON’T: Have unrealistic expectations for the day. Being spoilt rotten by your other half is great, but if you are disappointed, remember it’s just another day of the year. A relationship is for life, not just for Valentine’s Day – you heard it here first.

DO: Turn off your phones, tablets and laptops for the evening. Give eachother your undivided attention and make it an intimate one.

DON’T: Try this at home. It didn’t work out for Samantha, and it probably wouldn’t go well for you either.
