If there's one book we'd recommend above the rest if would be this one. Larousse Gastronomique is not just a cookbook but an encylcopedia of cuisine highlighting the best of French food and cooking techniques. There are various editions of the book but it really is fantastic insight to gastronomy.

Another important book for the shelf, The Silver Spoon is one of the most influential food books from the past 50 years and is regarded as the bible of Italian food.

3) Catalan Cuisine by Colman Andrews

 

A must-read: Colman Andrews explores Europe's great culinary traditions with a style of cooking that the average cook might not be familiar with. If you love food and love adventures this one's for you.

4) How to Eat by Nigella Lawson

The queen of food porn Nigella Lawson brings togther a great selection of recipes and tips that are incredibly accessible to the average cook.

5) Japanese Cooking by Shizuo Tsuji

This innovative book changed the way the world viewed Japanese cooking and elevated it to be regarded as haute cuisine.

6) The Complete Robouchon by Joel Robouchon

More than 800 precise, easy-to-follow recipes from one of the true masters of the culinary world. What more could you want?

7) Great Dishes of the World by Robert Carrier

Published in the 1960s, this book houses over 550 recipes from around the world ranging from classic French cuisine to simple Oriental stir-fries to much much more.

8) Kitchen Diaries by Nigel Slater

Nigel Slater has that wonderful ability unlike many of the chefs and home cooks out there, to really tell the story of loving and working with food. His Kitchen Diaries are inspiring to read. '‘The food in “The Kitchen Diaries” is simply what I eat at home" he says.
