If you’re anything like us, chances are you were weeping and screaming “FINALLY!” at your television when Matthew Crawley got down on one knee and popped the question to Lady Mary in the snow during the Christmas episode of Downton Abbey last year.
It was sweet, romantic and picturesque – the perfect fairy tale proposal. So we’ll admit we let out a collective “d’awww!” when we heard this story about how a lovely man proposed to his Downton-obsessed girlfriend.
Andy Chapman surprised his girlfriend Emma Harris with a surprise day out at Highclere Castle in Hampshire – the estate used as the fictional Downton Abbey in the television programme.
Emma originally assumed that the trip itself was the surprise, but needless to say she was shocked when Andy got down on one knee in the very same spot as Matthew Crawley and asked her to marry him. Romantic or what?
We swooned when Matthew proposed to Lady Mary in the snow last year
“When we drove up the huge driveway to the castle I knew it was Downton Abbey, I was so excited. It’s my favourite show on TV!” said Emma, speaking to the Daily Mail.
“We walked around the grounds of the estate and then out of the blue, Andy proposed. I was overwhelmed and so happy to accept in this beautiful setting. The whole experience was lovely – thank you so much to Young Epilepsy for organising the day, what you do is such a great cause,” she added.
The couple managed to tour the estate thanks to a special open day event at the castle in order to raise funds for the charity Young Epilepsy.
So not only was their proposal romantic as anything, it also was for a good cause. We think this is the perfect feel-good story to brighten up an otherwise grey afternoon.
