An American couple have welcomed a newborn baby boy that weighs just 14 ounces.
Decklen Maize, who wasn’t due until September, was born when mum Carrie opted to have her little boy through an emergency C-section after he suffered an umbilical cord prolapse at just 22 weeks.
The little boy was born on Tuesday May 13th and is currently on a ventilator fighting for his life at the St Mary Medical Centre, in Apple Valley, California.
The infant measures approximately 10 inches.
His father James told Sky News that the experience was difficult.
“If he’s a fighter, you know, we want him to fight and make his own decisions,” James said.
“It’s rough,” he admitted, “just being able to sit there at his bedside and just pretty much whisper.”
The couple lost their daughter, Serenity, just last year after being she was born at the same stage of Carrie’s pregnancy.
“A baby can be saved if you have a doctor that is willing to do what he has to do, we have a great doctor”, he added.
