If you’re married and a fan of all things Facebook, then you might need to be careful your online posting doesn’t end in marriage doom.

According to a legal firm in the UK, Facebook and online activities of married users on the site has been cited in more than a third of all divorce cases.

The most common signs of marriage woes was in cases of infidelity, where one partner claims to be single when they are very much married, or lying about financial gains or issues.

According to Mail Online, one Leeds-based law firm, Lake Legal said that 66 out of 200 of the divorce cases in their firm last year ended due to Facebook.

Speaking about the social media site, managing partner, Lyn Ayrton said:

“Social media provides an ongoing log of our lives. The sharing of written posts and pictures, often with geo-tagging, provides a record of activities that can be used in a court case.

“Often, if a partner refers to an impending bonus, a new job offer, or plans for a holiday, it may provide evidence that they are not telling the truth about their financial position. At the very least, it could call their credibility into question.”

Ayrton added that although some people are sneakier than others when it comes to their online behaviours, others haven’t worked out the concept of sharing online:

“Somebody said she was not in a relationship with anybody new but then posted a message inviting everybody to a housewarming party for her and her boyfriend.”
