Australian Women’s Weekly went in a very different direction for their July front cover, a move that is being commended by folk all over the globe.
The magazine, which boasts almost half a million in circulation, placed burn victim, author and motivational speaker, Turia Pitt, on its cover.
Back in 2011, the 26-year-old mining engineer was running a marathon when she got caught in a bushfire, resulting in burns all over her body and medical professionals at the time were unsure whether she would ever survive.
Just a few short years later and after undergoing hundreds of surgeries, Pitt secured a multimillion-dollar settlement with race organisers and is now raising funds for various charitable causes around the country.
Pitt, who is described by the magazine as “quite simply one of the most impressive women you will ever hope to meet”, shared images on her Instagram account calling the cover girl position “a huge honour”.
“For me, it sends the message that confidence equals beauty. There are a lot of women out there who are so beautiful but don’t have the confidence, and that’s what gets you over the line,” she told the magazine.
Alongside former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins, TV presenter Lisa Wilkinson and Penny Wong, Pitt is now a panellist for the Australian Women’s Weekly’s Women of the Future scholarship program.
The initiative “aims to uncover the women leaders of tomorrow,” and we think you’ll agree, after this outstanding display of sheer determination, fight and incredible spirit, Turia Pitt is the perfect cover girl for such a campaign.
