Most men love their superhero movies, but did you know that comparing your man to the likes of Spiderman, Batman or Thor can boost their body image and in turn spice up your sex life?
According to Todayhealth.com, men who feel a bond with their favourite superheroes are more satisfied with their bodies.
The study, conducted at the University of Buffalo in New York, even found that looking at a photograph of a superhero can increase a man’s strength.
To establish this finding men were asked to complete a handgrip test before and after they looked at the picture.
Photographs of Spiderman may help boost your man’s self-esteem
“For some men, exposure to extremely muscular superheroes may actually have a positive effect. It may make them feel better about their bodies,” said study researcher Ariana Young, a graduate student in psychology.
Researchers showed 100 males photographs of Spiderman and Batman before asking them how they felt.
The study showed that men who did not have a connection with the characters did not feel better about themselves, while those who did felt great about their bodies.
Researchers say that men are under more pressure than ever to keep their bodies in check.
“Men are more inundated today than in the past with images of big, jacked-up-looking men and ‘Here’s what you should look like’ messages,” Jesse Steinfeldt said a sports psychologist at Indiana University.
Unhappiness with body image has resulted in more men suffering from low self-esteem and depression, which can sometimes lead to steroid abuse and an obsession with muscularity.
“I think the study shows that boys and men need role models who are whole people, and if they get those kinds of role models, they feel better about themselves, their vulnerabilities and their bodies,” Steinfeldt said.
