Collins English Dictionary has just revealed their word of the year and to be fair, ‘binge-watch’ isn’t that much of a surprise.
We could say that the fact it’s getting dark earlier is an excuse for heading home for an evening with Netflix but to be honest, this is a year long hobby.
Reports say the use of the word is up 200% on last year which given the rapid increase of Netflix and Chill isn’t much of a surprise.
Commenting on the result, Helen Newstead, Head of Language Content at Collins said: “The rise in usage of ‘binge-watch’ is clearly linked to the biggest sea change in our viewing habits since the advent of the video recorder nearly 40 years ago.
“It’s not uncommon for viewers to binge-watch a whole season of programmes such as House of Cards or Breaking Bad in just a couple of evenings – something that, in the past, would have taken months – then discuss their binge-watching on social media”.
Other inclusions include ‘dadbod’, ‘clean-eating’, ‘swipe’ and ‘ghosting’ and it’s fair to say, we’ve been hearing a lot more of these this year.
