Classic Album Of The Week: The Frames – Fitzcarraldo

One of the most iconic Irish album's ever, Fitzcarraldo by The Frames, turns the grand old age of 20 this year. Feeling old? Yup, us too. Glen Hansard & Co are celebrating the momentous occasion with two gigs at the Iveagh Gardens on Saturday June 4th and Sunday June 5th so we decided to take this opportunity to look back at some of the finest moments of the 1995 album in our latest Classic Album Of The Week. Revelate This remains one of the band's most popular tracks and if there's an Irish person who says they haven't roared along to this in a pub at 2am, we'd say they're probably a liar. Revelate sees Hansard whip the song up to a frenetic finish with his signature angsty vocal and while he has since said that he thinks "what the hell was I on" when he listens back to Fitzcarraldo, we still absolutely love it. Fitzcarraldo The title track takes its name from Werner Herzog's 1982 film of the same name, which has been described as being about a man "pulling a ship over a mountain" and one of the stand-out elements of the song is Colm Mac Con Iomaire's incredible work on violin, ably assisted by Dee Armstrong on viola and Kevin Murphy on cello. Say It To Me Now Like many of the songs on Fitzcarraldo, Say It To Me Now carries an undertone of anger and frustration but Hansard's poignant and understated interpretation means it packs a real punch. In This Boat Together One thing that Fitzcarraldo does so well is capture the highs and lows, victories and struggles, of a relationship and nowhere is this clearer that on In This Boat Together.
