The cartoon is referencing the death of 3-year-old Syrian boy Alan Kurdi, whos body washed up on a Turkish beach. The image became a symbol of refugee’s plight and the image that spurred the world into caring.
The second incident is in reference to the New Year's Eve sex attacks in Cologne, Germany. The perpetrators were also widely reported to be refugees.
According to cbc news, Aylan's aunt commented:
"We're trying to forget a little bit and move on with our life. But to hurt us again, it's not fair."
Twitter users are turning on the magazine.
