Butter me up Scotty: Could Butter Coffee Help Slim Down Your Waistline and Boost Your Energy?

It all sounds a bit too good to be true...

Una Kavanagh

We smear it to toast, dollop it on potatoes and use it for baking, but to add it to coffee… Could this Butter Coffee actually be a way to promote weight loss?

Well that’s David Asprey, creator of Bulletproof Coffee and this mad Butter Coffee concoction claims.

Apparently the coffee’s unusual mix with butter will keep your energy levels up for a whopping “for six hours if you need it”, as well as “shrinking your waistline” and “improving cognitive function”.

But how did Asprey discover butter coffee in the first place? Well on top of Mount Kailash in Tibet apparently!

“I staggered into a guest house from the -10 degree weather and was literally rejuvenated by a creamy cup of yak butter tea” he says on his website. “The biohacker in me asked, “why?” and that was the genesis of my recipe […], which is widely heralded as a cognitive enhancing recipe.”

He continues saying that the butter contains “all the benefits of healthy milk fat with none of the damaging denatured casein proteins found in cream.”

Asprey recommends mixing into the coffee as much as 80 grams of butter, quite a significant amount of saturated fat.

However some health experts, like Diet and Nutrition Editor for NBC’s Today Show, Dr Madelyn Fernstrom, says that the unusual butter blend actually promotes weight gain and says that any extra energy experienced by drinkers is actually just a placebo effect and nothing more.

He says that Butter Coffee is “the creamiest, most satisfying’ cup of coffee” but we’re not sure…

There’s something a bit off-putting about shoving a wad of butter into our brew. We’re going to stick to milk and sugar thanks!
