This is the biggest reason parents regret their kid’s names

Not ideal.

Sometimes I ask my mam why she named me Megan and she says ‘as soon as you were born you just looked like a Megan’. My issue with her logic is that people look very very different they day they are born compared to the rest of my life, so it’s not the most sensible way of doing it.

Thankfully, she never regretted the name and I’ve grown to become quite fond of it too.

But more quite a few parents, this isn’t the case.

A new survey from Mumsnet has revealed some interesting insights into parents who regret the name they chose for their child.

Of those surveyed almost 20% of people said they regret at least one of their children’s names whether it’s their first or middle moniker.

Most people regret it within the first 6 weeks after the baby is born but some people surveyed said they only felt regret when the child became a teenager.

Above all reasons, the biggest factor for people regretting their child’s name is commonality.

A quarter of people who regret the name said it’s because of the popularity of the name. By this logic, names like Amelia, Olivia, Ezra and Asher are probably ones people regret most this year.

21% of people said they regret it because it just doesn’t feel right, 20% said they were pressured into it and 11% said the spelling and pronunciation was an issue.

Other factors include the nickname that goes with it, and the worry that they wont be taken seriously.

Despite all this regret only 9% of people said that they have considered changing the baby’s name.
