Baby Boy Born With Heart Outside His Chest Defies Odds

Warning: this story contains graphic images.

A baby boy born with his heart outside his chest has defied the odds and survived for six days.

Priyanka and Nirbhay Pal welcomed their son in a hospital in the Uttar Pradesh region of India last week but he was born with a very rare heart condition.

Ectopia cordis is a condition that affects eight babies in every million, 90 per cent of whom are stillborn or die within three days.

While the little one has certainly defied the odds, he needs immediate surgery, something which his parents can’t afford.

New father Nirbhay is quoted as saying: “The doctors said we should go to a private hospital and get surgery done. But I am a poor man.

“We can barely afford two square meals a day. I don’t know what to do. We are hoping that the government will help us.”
