It doesn’t matter how well prepared you are because more often than not something will have escaped you. And that something might just end up ruining your Christmas.
That’s why we’ve devised a checklist of the little things you might not have thought of and still have time to sort out…
1. It might seem like an obvious one but make sure you have everything you need for Christmas dinner. From the turkey to the potatoes to the Brussels sprouts (even though some might be wishing you don’t have those), make a list and check those cupboards.
2. Just as important as having the food is preparing it. One of the biggest mistakes is forgetting to read the labels about how to slowly defrost the turkey. Unless of you want to have packet chicken for your dinner, do this now!
3. If you are having guests around, it’s worthwhile checking for any dietary requirements they might have. If someone is a vegetarian or celiac, you might have to get in something that you wouldn’t normally.
4. The weekend before Christmas is ideal for finishing, or perhaps starting and finishing, all your wrapping. But before you sit down with the scissors and the ribbons, check you have enough paper and also enough tape.
5. Have you bought for everyone? Perhaps get something extra as an emergency present just in case you’ve overlooked your Aunt Jane twice-removed or your new friend buys you something and you didn’t expect them to.
6. It isn’t always possible but try to get everything on your child’s Christmas list (within reason of course). The last thing you want is an unhappy face sitting at the dinner table on Christmas day.
7. Read the labels on what you have bought for your friends and family. If a kid’s toy needs batteries, buy extra. There’s no point having an electric car if you don’t have the batteries to power it.
8. Buy in the basic necessities including milk and tea. If you take medication, check you have enough to last. Also check how much gas or coal you have. Trust us, an Irish Christmas without heating is not fun!
9. If you haven’t visited everyone you need to, do it this weekend. It really is your last chance and will also give you an excuse for a chat and a cuppa.
10. Last but by no means least, the one item that completes a Christmas: a swig of mistletoe. While you’re at it, make sure your other half or your crush is also around!
