Are You The Newbie At The Farmers’ Market? Get The Most Out Of It With Our Top Tips

Are you dying to see what the fuss is about but not sure of the protocol? Check out these tips and you'll be browsing like a regular...

Her

Whether it’s the recessionary pinch of the pocket or if it’s just us deciding we need to get back to our roots, farmers’ markets are hitting it off across the country.

Organic vegetables, nuts, treats are in abundance either to buy or to spark up some ideas in your own head as to what you can do with your back garden.

Really want to go visit the Sunday market but afraid you won’t know what to do with yourself? There’s no need to feel uncomfortable, everyone’s welcome, and here are some tips to get you started:

Start early

You will be getting your food straight from the people who grew it and it will all be on display. It’s not a case of asking the fruit and veg guy to run into the back storeroom and pick you out a fresher-looking bunch of what’s-its. Early bird catches the worm so get there early or you’ll miss out on your favourite food.

Know Your Season

It will be organic produce available at the market, and all of it will have been grown locally. So know your seasons and what kind of vegetables are in season. Be sure to plan your menus and shopping list around what kind of food will be available at the market.

Get Sustainable

Show up with your own reusable shopping bag. Most of us have a few in the boot of the car, and you’ll feel more like an insider instead of lugging around a bunch of plastic bags.

Don’t Be Shy

Chat to the people at the stalls and introduce yourself. All of a sudden you’ll have people who can tell you when your favourite foods are coming into season and may even start putting aside your favourite produce for you.

Take Whatever Comes

It is a good idea to go with a shopping list but don’t be too cautious about trying new things either. And don’t be afraid to buy more than you originally planned. You might get home and decide you prefer one vegetable to another.

Buy In Bulk

Keep an eye on the option to buy your produce in bulk, because it may work out cheaper. You can always bring them home, make some meals and soup from the excess and freeze them.

Don’t Panic Buy

Just because the first guy has peaches, doesn’t mean the sixth guy won’t have more peaches, and better peaches!

Bring Change

The vendors mightn’t have a lot of change on them so try to avoid handing over large cash amounts in notes.

Expect More

Don’t just think fruit and vegetables, keep an open mind because you could come across a wealth of chutneys, soaps, fudge, flowers, gifts, cheese, home-baked goods… ooooh, enjoy.
