Irish shoppers are being duped by brands that they think are Irish but in fact are produced in other countries.

According to The Irish Star, products which are often thought to be Irish include Lyons Tea, Siucra and HB, which are all produced abroad.

Nearly 85 per cent of Irish shoppers believe that the German-produced Siucra brand is Irish made, 77 per cent believed that Lyons was produced here and 71 per cent believe they are supporting Irish jobs by buying HB.

Many Irish shoppers perceive Lyons Tea to be an Irish produced brand

Other brands perceived to be Irish include Erin packet soup, Cully and Sully Soup and Charleville Cheese.

However it was revealed that 80 per cent of shoppers try to be loyal to Irish products as best they can.

Love Irish Food stressed that changing just two products in each basket to support an Irish business could generate €300 million euro for our economy.

Speaking to the paper, Love Irish Food’s Kieran Rumley said: “We have long been aware of the confusion which exists surrounding what food and drink brands are produced here or imported.

“These results give an indication as to how much this confusion is costing the Irish economy every year.”
