Apparently No One is Doing This on Facebook Anymore

It's no lolling matter.

How do you tell someone that you’re laughing while you’re online?

If you’re a fan of a well-placed emoji, the odd “haha” or even a “hehe”, read on.

It looks as though one of the Internet’s (former) favourite acronyms has had its day and LOL is no more.

Often confused by our mammies as “lots of love”, the short-hand way to say “laughing out loud” has fallen from its pedestal as the most popular way to express your amusement online.

A recent study carried out by Facebook on “e-laughing” finds that “LOL” has been replaced by “haha” and the use of emojis.

A meagre 1.9 per cent of posts feature LOL anymore, compared with 51.4 per cent for “haha”.

The study also outlined some differences in gender, with women more likely to use emojis than men.

If you’re still a “LOL” user, chances are you’re a little older than the average Facebook user, with the report stating that emoji fans are slightly younger than the median “haha” person, but both of these are younger than the people using “hehes” and “lols”.

If you want to read the full Facebook report, you’ll find it here.
