Anita Kranjc, 48, faces up to ten years in prison for feeding dehydrated pigs on their way to a Canadian slaughterhouse. Canadian media reports Kranjc faces charges of “criminal mischief” for spraying an “unknown liquid into the trailer where the hogs were situated”.
Now she could be fined up to $5,000. Kranjc is the co-founder of animal rights group Toronto Pig Save whose members routinely sit at traffic lights awaiting trucks en route to the slaughterhouse.
She told local newspaper Inside Toronto: “It was really shocking when I got the summons. I couldn’t believe I was being charged for giving water to thirsty pigs. My defence is that I was being a good Samaritan.
“If I face a fine, I’d rather just do the time in jail.”
The incident occurred on the 22nd of June this year. Kranjc claims she was being a good activist and merely cared for the pigs safety. Under Canadian las pigs are seen as property and can be transported for up to 36 hours without food and water.
A video shared by a fellow activist shows Kranjc pleading with the truck driver to have compassion on the pigs. He calls Kranjc a “dumb frickin’ broad” and tells her to stop giving the pigs water.
The video shows the pigs clearly in distress and in need of the water.
