For this couple it might have had something to do with the hot air balloon crashing into the waves.
Eric Barretto planned to propose to his girlfriend on a hot air balloon, but unfortunately things didn’t go to plan.
According to a San Diego official, the wind changed as the hot air balloon headed away from shore, causing the basket to be struck by breaking waves. The video clip below was shot from passers-by who saw the drama unfold.
When the balloon crashed into the sea, the basket filled with water meaning the young couple had to be saved from serious harm by a group of local surfers.
The situation was made more difficult by the fact that one of the passengers couldn’t swim and they were faced with strong winds.
Marine Safety Captain Larry Giles added:
‘It was kind of dicey, because a few times the guys hanging on the rope got airborne.”
There is a happy ending though. Despite the traumatic experience, the woman said yes to the marriage proposal.
We’re sure this won’t be a day they’ll ever forget.
