A Facebook post thanking Aer Lingus for their assistance to the families of six Irish students who lost their lives in California this week has gone viral, prompting hundreds of other passengers to share their stories of kindnesses shown by Aer Lingus staff.

Posting from Dalkey on Thursday, Jonathon Wallace shared this message on the Irish national airline’s Facebook page.

“Hi Aer Lingus, I hear this morning of your compassion, care, sympathy and utmost professionalism, yet again. You’ve been helping fly the families of those poor kids in Berkeley, California out to the States. I have heard of two wonderful stories already today, about what you’ve done for the grieving families. I cannot speak highly enough of you. Your assistance for poor Karen Buckley was immense, and you’re doing it again now. I can’t imagine what those people must be feeling, but your gestures are beyond anything i’ve seen or heard in Customer Care, and i emphasise ‘CARE’. I’ve only heard this morning that a member of my local GAA club is injured, but hopefully will be ok. Ireland is a small place, and i love how we all come together as one massive community when such tragedies occur. You guys are part of that. All i can say as a customer of yours, and as an Irish man thinking of those poor kids and their families….is thank you Aer Lingus. Thank you.” [SIC]

In the hours since, the message has attracted over 60,000 “likes” and has been shared almost 5,000 times.

More telling, though, is the sheer volume of similar comments underneath, where men and women of all ages shared their stories of how far some kindness went on their own darkest days.
