Do you know your sexual response cycle? It’s a weird question, we’ll admit, but apparently figuring out this key bit of information could take your sex life from ‘meh’ to ‘mother-of-God!’ faster than you can say ‘shall we take this to the bedroom?’

When it comes to sex, it really is worth learning about how your own body works and how you go about reaching climax – this is where your sexual response cycle comes in.

Your sexual response cycle is an individual cycle that determines how you go about having an orgasm. Once you understand it and know how it works, you can easily inject a little extra ‘ooh!’ into your sex life.

The sexual response cycle has four stages that you need to be aware of…

Upgrade your sex life by figuring out how your sexual response cycle works

1. The Excited Stage: This is when your brain converts your innocent senses like touch, taste or smell into feelings of sexual arousal. Experts call this the ‘warming up’ stage. You know, it’s when you start to get those types of feelings. Your blood starts to pump faster through your veins, your breathing gets a little shallower and you experience a ‘sex flush’ – you basically start to become more aware of feelings occurring below your belt area.

If you want to have a mind-blowing orgasm, sexperts recommend ‘milking’ this stage of the process. According to research, the average woman needs at least 45minutes in order to be turned on enough for actual sex. The more, ahem, excited you are, the stronger your orgasm will be.

2. The Peak Stage: This stage occurs when your excitement is at its peak and you’re just about to orgasm. Unsurprisingly, this phase is much shorter in women than it is in men.

In order to make the most of this stage, it’s important to focus on your body completely. If you can bear it – have your partner stop and start his movements or slow things down completely. This will prolong that lovely pre-orgasm feeling and ensure that when you finally do orgasm, it is ten times more intense.

3. The Orgasm Stage: The average orgasm lasts for a measly 15 seconds, but if you can exercise a bit of control during phase two, you’ll find that your orgasm will become stronger and longer. Meaning intense pleasure for you and a happy partner for him – it’s a win/win situation, right? We think so.

4. The Calming Stage: This stage occurs immediately after you orgasm. Your muscles start to unclench and your body feels ridiculously relaxed. Directly after orgasm your body releases the hormone prolactin, which gives you that lovely sleepy feeling.

It’s a good idea to pay attention and to try and work out the different stages of your own sexual response cycle the next time you’re having some ‘alone’ time with your man. Once you can distinguish your own cycle, it will make it easier to play around and figure out what kinds of methods work for you when it comes to reaching the big O.
