Tonight will mark the start of a new era in Irish women’s rugby as a new-look Irish team will line out against Italy in the opening game of their Six Nations campaign this evening.
Ireland are coming into the game off the back of a number of hugely successful years coupled with a massively successful run in the 2014 World Cup.
The squad will be lead out by newly-appointed captain Niamh Briggs, who takes over at the helm from the retired Fiona Coghlan.
Ireland will be hoping to secure a win in Italy this evening and many fans will be looking back two years when Ireland famously captured the Grand Slam on a St Patrick’s Day that supporters will remember for some time to come.
Aside from a new captain, there are also twelve uncapped players announced for this Six Nations game.
Despite new faces and tactics, the side recorded a win in a warm-up game played in Ashbourne against Wales.
The side will be looking to Briggs for inspiration following some fantastic kicking from the talented player last year.
This evening’s game is followed up with a home game to France on February 13th and a second home game to England on February 27th.
Ireland will also meet Wales and Scotland in March.
