A “signing Santa” day made a number of children with hearing impairments very happy when he turned up to their local shopping centre.
The Fair Oaks mall in Fairfax, Virginia hosted the event which allowed children with hearing difficulties to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas through the use of sign language.
This event took place in the mall’s Microsoft Ice Palace which features a 30-foot ice dome and falling snow.
Santa Claus was fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) making it easy for the children to communicate with him.
Some of the parents spoke to local news station WTTG about how much the event meant to their children.
“If we had gone to visit a regular Santa Claus, he would probably only hear about half of what Santa was saying,” one mother explained. “It’s nice that he sees the sign and hears Santa speaking at the same time.”
However, sometimes these events happen without any organisation.
Last year, 3-year-old Cameron Sylvester, who is hearing impaired, visited a shopping centre in Boston
Once Santa realized the boy’s condition, he began communicating with him through sign language, making it a very special moment for Cameron’s family.
