Get app-happy to help manage your mind this year.

Rebecca McKnight

Pharrell Williams almost sang about it, and this year we’re all planning to get “apply”.

Your phone is no longer just a communication device. Instead, you can organise your whole life with that little marvel of technology.

Here, we’ve picked five of the best apps to help you manage your time, energy and money for the year ahead.

MyFitnessPal

It’s the New Year’s Resolution 99% of us make; we’re going to get fitter and eat better in the year ahead. It’s easily said, not so easily done, but help is at hand. MyFitnessPal is a great resource for setting goals, tracking your food and drink habits and logging your exercise as it happens. There’s a great sense of achievement that comes with seeing your distances increase. On the flip side, there’s a sharp shock when you realise how quickly the snacks add up! If a healthy lifestyle is one of your ambitions this year, this app is a great place to get started.

RescueTime

This one might hurt a little at first. If one of your goals is to cut back on the amount of time you waste online doing God knows what, RescueTime may be the perfect app for you. This nifty little creation will track the time you spend dawdling on the likes of Facebook and Twitter and send you a weekly email report. It’s not all negative though, you can set goals to help you reduce the wasted time and channel your internet activity into something more productive.

Dropbox

The simplest ideas are often the best. Dropbox is a game-changer, allowing you to safely send files and information to another user without clogging up their storage. You are given an online folder on which to store your photos, videos and documents, which you can access from any computer with your personal login. Whether it’s transferring work from your home computer to your work one without physically moving a drive, or simply collecting pictures from friends for a pal’s surprise party, you’ll soon wonder how you ever lived without it.

Asana

If your work involves organising a team, meet your new tech best friend. Asana is a shared task list accessed by all added members of a team. You can assign goals, lay out timelines and divide work in a fair and manageable way so that everyone can see progress as it’s being made. You can also add notes, so ideas and future plans are all held in the same place. It’s also one of the best ways we’ve found of cutting down on work emails.

Flipboard

Ok, we’ll hold our hands up – this isn’t so much of an organisational one, but it’s a very organised way to access entertainment! Filpboard is a free app where you can collect news from sources you like, creating your own virtual magazine. It’s a great way to stay up to date without trawling though never-ending list of sites or spending a fortune on magazines. You can sync it with your social media accounts too, making sharing with friends easy as pie.
