At this time of year, it can be very easy to pick up one of the winter bugs that are doing the rounds.
Plunging temperatures, hectic schedules and poor lifestyle choices can leave us open to falling ill but taking a few steps to bolster your immune system can keep you powering though until spring.
1) Get proper rest
This is easier said than done but saying ‘no’ to after-work plans in favour of an early night can make all the difference at this time of year. If you’re working hard, your body needs time to rest and recover so forget the FOMO and enjoy some downtime instead.
2) Boost your diet
A balanced diet is your strongest tool to fight off the flu so stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables when you’re doing your winter shop. Probiotics contained in yogurts are said to boost your immune system, while oats and barley can be “more potent than echanecia”. Garlic, ginger and citrus fruits are other sure-fire winners when it comes to fighting colds. If you’re finding it hard to fit everything in, why not try a juice like one?
3) Warm up
In this weather, all we want is something to take away the chill and luckily, some of our favourite choices are also great for our health. Chicken soup has been proven to help fight against infection and a Harvard study showed that people who drank five cups a day of black tea for two weeks had ten times more virus-fighting compounds in their blood than others who drank a placebo. So, drink up!
4) Exercise regularly
It may the last thing you fancy doing when you roll out of bed in the morning but regular exercise can help boost your immune system and it will also give you more energy for the rest of the day. Whether it’s walking to work or taking a Pilates class on your lunch break, every little bit helps.
5) Try a multivitamin
If you’re worried that you’re not getting enough vitamins from your diet, why not take a multivitamin for the winter months? These days, there are specific supplements to reflect different needs to consult your pharmacist or health food advisor for some tips.
6) Wrap up
Your mam might have annoyed you with her constant reminders to bring your coat… but she was right! If you’re cold and exposed in low temperature, you’re more likely to get sick so don’t forget the coat, or the gloves, or the hat!
7) Wash your hands regularly
Chances are, a co-worker or a flatmate has picked up one of the winter’s colds so if you want to avoid catching it, keep hand sanitiser close by and wash your hands regularly.
8) Skip the stress
Stress has been proven to lower the immune system so meet any challenges head on and do your best to take a calm approach to any work or personal problems.
