A man who was blind for 33 years can see again, thanks to groundbreaking surgery where he was fitted with a bionic eye device.

Larry Hester was diagnosed with retinis pigmentosa in his early 30s, and hadn’t seen his wife in nearly 33 years. Following years of research at Duke University, a new Argus II Retinal Prosthesis Device has been created.

According to Duke Medicine, the electronic chip is inserted into the eye and sends light signals to his brain.

When Larry Hester regains his sight for the first time following surgery, his wife runs over to kiss him.

Overwhelmed by the ability to distinguish lights again, Larry asks:

“I just wonder how I have been so lucky.’Why me?”

This video is really moving.
