A good skin regime can mean healthy, glowing skin for years to come…
And we don’t mean hours of cleansing, toning, moisturising and DIY spa-ing everyday, we are talking about the basics of good skincare and healthy lifestyle choices that can help delay the natural ageing process and even prevent some skin problems.
Guarantee yourself years of younger-looking, glowing skin and get started with these top five tips.
1. Protect Yourself
It might sound like old news, but one of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problem, as well as an increase in the serious risk of skin cancer.
For complete top-to-toe skin protection:
Use Sunscreen
Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. It doesn’t have to be sunny to use it, cloud-covered sunrays can be as dangerous.
Seek Shade
This rule mightn’t apply to us as much in Ireland but if we’re experiencing a particularly sunny day or you’re lucky enough to be holidaying abroad, avoid the sun between 10am and 4pm when the rays are at their strongest.
Be a happy, healthy lady in the sun…
2. Avoid Smoking
Smoking can make your skin look years older and contributes to wrinkles. It also narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin, the fibre that give your skin its strength and elasticity. Not attractive. If you are a smoker, it’s the best time of year to think about quitting.
3. TLC… Tender, Loving Care
Daily bouts of cleansing, exfoliating and shaving can take its toll on your skin.
Keep it gentle by:
Limit Your Bath Time
Hot water and long showers or baths remove oils from your skin. Limit you’re the time you spend in the shower, and use warm, rather than hot, water.
Avoid Strong Soaps
Strong soaps and detergents can also strip oil from your skin. Instead, choose mild cleansers. You’ll feel the difference within weeks.
Shave Carefully
To protect and lubricate your skin, apply shaving cream, lotion or gel before shaving. For the closest shave, use a clean, sharp razor. Shave in the direction the hair grows, not against it.
Pat, Don’t Scrub!
After washing or bathing, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on your skin.
Always Moisturise…
If your skin is dry, use a moisturiser that fits your skin type. For daily use, consider a moisturizer that contains SPF.
Time to get out… nooooo!
4. You Are What You Eat
A healthy diet can make you feel good, but can also make you look your best. Plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. Some research suggests that a diet rich in vitamin C and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger-looking skin.
5. Manage Your Stress
Uncontrolled stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. Take steps to manage your stress, set reasonable limits, scale back your to-do list and make time to do the things you enjoy and guarantee yourself a healthy mind and skin.
