A petition has been launched to introduce paid miscarriage leave before 24 weeks
Minister Norma Foley has spoken out in support of introducing paid miscarriage leave before 24 weeks.
There have been calls to introduce paid miscarriage leave in Ireland for some time, but Minister Foley said she wants to support women “in every opportunity.”
When asked if Ireland would introduce similar bereavement leave to the UK, Minister Foley said it’s something worth supporting.
As per breakingnews.ie, Norma Foley said she would be very supportive of it.
“I absolutely would, but I respect that a minister has to go to the [Department of Public Expenditure and Reform] in relation to that, and that argument has to be brought out.
“We are seeking, from a gender point of view, to give maximum opportunity to all, including women. So that’s in terms of employment, in terms of their health, that’s in terms of supporting them in every opportunity.
“So obviously I would be very supportive of that, but it would be a matter for another minister to get that one over the line, but I would be very supportive of it.”
Earlier this year, Jessica Bourke called on the Irish government to introduce paid miscarriage leave before 24 weeks.
Jessica shared: “Eighteen years ago, I held my breath in fear of losing our unborn child to miscarriage. It was a terrifying encounter that deeply affected my family and me, and since then, it has been my mission to alleviate this suffering for others on their fertility journey.
“Miscarriage is not only a physical ordeal but also a heavy emotional burden. The mental health implications can be severe.”
In the UK, parents are offered paid leave for two weeks when there is a miscarriage before 24 weeks.
