How to cope with loneliness during the Christmas period

Kat O'Connor

Dealing with feelings of loneliness at Christmas is more common than we realise

Christmas is often hailed as the most wonderful time of year but it is also an isolating time for many.

We often fail to realise that there are many people out there who don’t have loved ones to celebrate with. Others may not be able to afford to go out every other day and reunite with friends and others may be too mentally unwell to even consider socialising.

It’s a complicated time of year that we are often guilty of sugarcoating, but speaking out about these struggles will help people feel less alone.

It’s important to acknowledge that dealing with loneliness at Christmas is common but there are ways to cope with it.

Many of us may feel isolated when we see half our Instagram feed meeting up with friends. However, that is simply a fraction of someone’s day.

The people in those photos are not socialising every five minutes. We fail to realise Instagram is a highlights reel of someone’s day and not reality.

It may be common but you do not have to lose hope if you’re struggling with loneliness.

Mental health charity Turn2Me is urging people who are feeling lonely to reach out during the Christmas period.

The team said: “Christmas can be an isolating time for those who are away from loved ones or who feel disconnected from festive celebrations. Turn2Me offers a range of services, including online support groups, where people can connect with others facing similar challenges and feel less alone during the season.”

Turn2Me is urging people to make use of its free online mental health services in the lead-up to Christmas.
