Her.ie Health Revolution: What Are Migraines and How Can I Avoid Them?

Migraines can leave you feeling absolutely miserable. Watch out for the triggers and avoid the pain!

Anyone who has ever had the misfortune to suffer from migraines will know just how unpleasant they are, and how miserable they can make you feel.

If you’re one of those people, it’s important to know what it is that’s causing your pain, and how you can manage it best.

A migraine is a common type of severe headache that can bring with it symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light and even vomiting.

They occur in women more often than in men, and may run in families. The headache is the result of some abnormal brain activity, but this can be triggered in many ways.

Some of the ways in which migraines may be sparked:

  • Alcohol
  • Stress
  • Strong odours
  • Bright lights
  • Smoking
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Changes in hormone levels

Migraines are also believed to be triggered by certain foods, including those high in MSG, chocolate, dairy products, preserved meats and citrus fruits.

NOTE: Migraines are not a sign of any serious medical problem, but it’s important to visit your doctor to make sure your symptoms actually indicate a migraine of another condition.
