We all live increasingly chaotic lives and are constantly bombarded with new information on a daily basis. So if you’re feeling a little frenzied then you could be in need of a mind detox.
And having a clear head can give you the fresh perspective you need to look at and make changes in other areas of your life such as your career, financial situation, physical and mental health plus how you relate to your family and friends.
Our first tip is don’t forget to breathe! Sounds simple huh? Breathing acts as a natural stress reliever. Take a moment to drop your shoulders, relax your jaw, breathe out and visualise the stress and negative feelings leaving your body through your mouth. Inhale and imagine positive energy flowing inside you. Repeat this ten times and you’ll be amazed at how ready you are to get up and get on with your day.
We’re all guilty of having a knee jerk reaction when our buttons get pushed. But the next time something is said that would normally cause you to lash out pause for a minute and count to ten. This top tip gives you the chance to give a considered response to whatever has just happened. You’ll find that the crisis is not as big as you originally thought because you can now act rationally and figure out the options available to you.
It might all sound like hippy mumbo jumbo but trust us if you get in the habit of using positive mantras they have the power to profoundly change your life. Here are some suggestions: “I like to try new things,” “I keep calm under pressure,”,” “I trust myself to make the right choices.” Repeating these or similar phrases will do wonders for your self-confidence and as you begin to really believe them, you will find your mind detoxing.
As you are building your positive feelings try to learn how to keep that inner voice under control. You know the one we’re talking about? That negative, nagging voice that says all manners of nasty things to bring you down. We really are our own worst critic at times. Think about it, we’re sure you would never dream of saying these things to your best friend so why on earth would you feel it’s ok to speak to yourself in such a way? Start right now by treating yourself better and not entertaining these negative thought patterns.
We’ve all had bad things happen to us in our lives and we’ve all had people mistreat us. As challenging as it is these events help define us and build character. The key is not letting these negative experiences consume us. One of the most difficult but rewarding ways to clear your mind is to accept that these things happened but not to dwell on them so that you can move forward with your life. Deal with life’s knocks, analyse them and of course learn what you can from them. And on the flipside if you’ve caused other people upset, whether intentionally or unintentionally, don’t hold on to the guilt. Instead own up to your mistakes, apologise or make amends in a way that is appropriate.
Always try to look at the big picture and as the saying goes don’t sweat the small stuff! Think about whether what you’re getting worked up about today will matter in five years or even five months time because chances are it won’t. Obsessing over what people may think of you, hurtful experiences and nitpicking over day-to-day occurences all drain your energy. By focussing so much of your attention on these things you’ll be missing out on new opportunities.
There are multiple benefits of getting enough rest and nearly all problems can be solved with a good nights sleep.
So many of us live in the past rehashing events that we have no power to change or always looking to the future when that better job, slimmer figure or great boyfriend will make us happy. Here’s the key, you need to be content now, just as you are. Being truly present in your life is one the best ways to detox your mind. Take joy from the little things that are happening around you, don’t miss them because you’re too absorbed in daydreming about the future or dwelling on the past. The present is a gift so you need to learn how to enjoy it.
If putting all these tips into place seems daunting just remember that even if you’re only taking small steps you’re still moving forwards.
