Looking after a child is hard work and you need to be prepared for the unexpected. We have First Aid tips from the Irish Red Cross on what to do when your child is choking.

Looking after a family is one of the hardest jobs a parent will ever do. And panic can easily set in when you find yourself in a situation you are not familiar with, especially if it’s affecting your child’s health.

One situation like this could be a child beginning to choke.

We list the correct First Aid steps here, from The Irish Red Cross.

1. If an infant is unable to breathe, cough or cry, and you suspect they have a severe obstruction in their throat: Give up to five back blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.

2. If the obstruction is still present give up to five chest thrusts, with two fingers in the middle of the chest.

3. Continue this cycle of five back blows and five chest thrusts until help arrives.

4. If the infant goes unconscious dial 999 (or 112) for an ambulance and then follow CPR protocols.

5. Anyone who has been treated for choking in this way should be advised to see their doctor after the incident.

A Family First Aid Course with The Irish Red Cross is covered in full GloHealth members with the Kids Health personalised package.
